From assistance to dependence
reflections on the use of Athos and the legal critique in the STJ

The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into the Brazilian Judiciary has sought to address procedural delays and the overload of cases. In this context, the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) created the Athos system, which uses algorithms to identify patterns among cases and assist in jurisprudential research. This study analyzes how the use of Athos impacts judicial activity and the ethical and legal limits arising from decision-making automation. It is justified by the need to reflect on the responsible use of AI in the Judiciary. The research adopts the deductive method, with bibliographic and legislative analysis, constituting a case study on Athos and its influence on judicial autonomy.
